A Time to Remember, A Time to Reconnect

As a child I remember thinking that Olim who make Aliyah to Israel during the spring must fall in love with the country immediately… the welcoming blossom from the citrus fruit orchards surrounding Ben Gurion airport was irresistible.
Today many of these orchards are not there. Israel has grown and development of roads, housing and industry has taken their places. Yet the development included planting many beautiful trees that bloom in myriad colors all over the country and spread their varied scents in the air.

For me, spring is a time of hope, when the trees renew their efflorescence and the streets and beaches fill with people. It must be for this reason that two of the most meaningful days for Jews all over the world Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Day) and Yom Hazikaron (Remembrance Day) fall in the spring, to remind all of us that while we mourn our dead and commit to never forget the past, we should also invest in our future. Our future as a global Jewish community, connected and committed to caring for each other.

Bill Clinton wrote in his book GIVING …” many of our greatest challenges can be overcome thought the simple act of giving… With the power of the Internet, everyone has the unprecedented ability to change the world”…
In these days when we remember all those who sacrificed their lives to secure our future, we must make a commitment to them, by investing in staying connected as a caring community.
